The blessings in the next few years were truly the hand and grace of God upon his life and the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church. By , the church could no longer accommodate the crowd in their current building and Pastor Luter challenged his congregation to increase their tithes and offerings to build a larger sanctuary. In March of , God rewarded their faithfulness and Pastor Luter moved his growing membership into a 1, seat sanctuary.
Currently, FABC is still growing and in December , the congregation moved into a brand new 3, seat sanctuary with separate areas for children and youth worship services. Pastor Luter's strategy for congregational growth is embedded in his concept he calls "FRANgelism"—the acronym "FRAN" standing for friends, relatives, associates, and neighbors where he encourages his congregation to invite them to come to church with you. When those filled, they would seat worshippers on the platform, repeating the same during each of three Sunday morning services. There were other problems. Most church members—fleeing the destruction and perhaps looking for a fresh start—were spread across the South. Luter had lost his church building, and he had lost his congregation.
Pastors throughout the nation phoned and pledged their help in rebuilding. Luter reconnected with church members in other cities—in Baton Rouge and Birmingham and Houston—and began holding church services in those cities, too. He became a circuit preacher, traveling thousands of miles each month in his Jeep Cherokee to minister to his flock.
They hugged and cried and laughed. It was like a family reunion, and Luter was encouraged. The dirty water and smelly sludge was gone, replaced with brand-new carpet and tiles. Are you in a storm?
