The easiest way to decide what length the new chain should be cut down to is by measuring it against the one you are replacing. Then, after threading it through the derailleur, pull the two ends together between the derailleur and the bottom of the chainring. At the correct length, the derailleur should be under tension without being locked-out, so conservatively take out the number of chain links needed to achieve this. How do you maintain your chain? What people call 10 speed is a "2 chainrings x 5 sprockets" bike, and what is called 9 speed is a " N chainrings x 9 sprockets" bike.
